The Bedlington town centre development scheme, which was criticised by local councillors in March for its perceived lack of progress has just had a £2m funding boost approved by Northumberland County Council’s cabinet, due to the rising construction costs.
The purpose of the significant development is to bring in much needed new retail and leisure opportunities for the Bedlington community and its residents, as well as a small amount of housing. The development was criticised after the lack of progress was noted by local members of the community. However, deputy leader Councillor Richard Wearmouth laminated the council’s support for the scheme, with a further investment of just over £2 million to ensure the project is completed promised.
Coun Wearmouth said:
“This is about making sure that we keep our promise to develop Bedlington Town Centre. We have got some additional costs that require some additional funding. This £2 million will make sure that the scheme is realised. We have had some unexpected things that have come up that have added to the cost, inflation has added to construction costs across not just the county but the country.”
